Contrary to all of the hype that has arisen, this date does not mark the end of the world. Ancient religious texts and predictions by famous prophets have been widely misinterpreted out of ignorance or fatalist attitudes. In fact, this date is the start of a new cycle in the Mayan calendar called Job Ajaw, or the Fifth Sun. It is a time when there will be a move toward the Natural Order so that both the Earth and humanity can reach the next stage of evolution. We must strive to live a simple, harmonious life that is ecologically conscientious. The solution lies within us but there is no time to waste.

Sadly, however, the misconception remains because most of what is known about this civilization comes from archaeological research, which has never asked the heirs to this tradition about their origins. Quite erroneously, researchers have believed that nothing more than ethnicity connects the Maya of today to such a complex, magnificent past. After five hundred years of slavery, exploitation, isolation, discrimination, and extreme poverty, it is no wonder that the Maya lost some of their impressive knowledge and abilities.
