Literary Translation and Pizza Dough: Both Need a Break for Best Results

Growing up, my mom would make her own pizza, including the pizza dough, from scratch. It was a family tradition for special events and holidays. It took some intense mixing, blending and pounding, and then, some rest in a warm place covered by a towel, so the yeast could do its work and the dough could rise before being pummeled again. Most people don’t have time to make pizza dough from scratch anymore or the patience for yeast and rolling pins, but this slow and patient physical work makes me think of the process of translation.
