Why We Don’t Italicize Spanish

The debate over when (or if) to italicize unfamiliar words is eternal. Do you italicize a word and flag it as different for English-only readers? Do you leave it as it is and trust readers to infer from the context? Author Daniel José Older makes this argument for why he leaves Spanish words un-italicized in his work:
